Investment Casting Process
Investment casting, also known as lost-wax casting, is a precise metal forming technique that allows for the creation of intricate and complex shapes with excellent surface finish and dimensional accuracy. The process involves creating a wax pattern of the desired part, which is then coated with a ceramic shell material. The wax is melted out, leaving a hollow cavity in the hardened ceramic shell. Molten metal is then poured into the cavity, and once solidified, the ceramic shell is broken away, revealing the final metal casting. This process is widely used in various industries, including aerospace, automotive, medical, and jewelry manufacturing, for producing high-quality components with minimal post-processing requirements.
Investment casting requires: a metal die, was, ceramic slurry, furnace, molten metal, and any machines needed for the finishing and polishing process. The process of investment casting includes:
- Prototype creation
- Mold creation
- Pouring
- Cooling
- Casting removal
- Finishing
