What is the Cup of a Propeller?
Cup: An indent forged in the trailing edge of a propeller blade for increased energy efficiency.
For industrial propellers that churn fluid at full throttle, cup is a cast configuration in which the trailing edge of the blade curls away from the motor. The indent created in the blade holds more fluid, increasing the propeller's pitch.
Cupping on cast propellers benefits the motor in several different ways, including:
- Reduces engine speed at full throttle
- Creates a higher pitch with less energy consumption
- Reduces taxation of the motor by “digging” the prop firmly into the liquid
- Reduces cavitation
Cavitation occurs when vacuum bubbles form on the blade because of pressure changes in the liquid. Over time, cavitation erodes manufacturing blades. Severe cavitation can disintegrate the blades, which causes them to shatter.
